’70 Pontiac GTO Ram Air IV 1 of 12 Manual 4 Speed Convertibles

1970 GTO Ram Air IV 4 Speed Convertible

In 1970 the Pontiac division of General Motors built 40,149 GTO’s, 3,784 were convertibles.  Only 12* GTO convertibles were fitted with the 370 HP Ram Air IV V-8 engine and 4-speed manual transmission.

One of the 12 was discovered covered in dust in a warehouse in Colorado.  Fully documented and with a PHS build sheet the car is now in the process of being brought back to original showroom condition by Gary Riley at Level One Restoration in Arvada, Colorado. The term “showroom” is important because before taking possession of the car the original owner had the dealer install some “options”.

As the photo shows, the car was painted black at some time in the past.  The original car was ordered in Palomino Copper with option 422 (body accent stripes).  These stripes were part of the Judge package.  Of the 12 RA-IV GTO convertibles how many were finished in Palomino Copper** with option 422?  If you guessed, “maybe only 1” you would get few arguments.

Ken will be meeting with Gary to determine the best way to present the car.  Unknown to the public for a number of years it is sure to generate a great deal of interest in the GTO community.

When the car is completed Ken will arrange a suitable public presentation.  But for now GTO fans are left to speculate about the finished product and make do with this photo of the “coming attraction”?  Contact Ken and maybe he will share a few of the interesting tidbits about this fantastic car.

*For 1970, 37 GTO convertibles came with the RA-IV engine. 24 with the four-speed manual transmission and the remaining 13 with the automatic transmission. 12 of the 4-speeds with the RA-IV came with the Judge option and 12 as GTO’s. 6/7of the automatics with RA-IV came with the Judge option leaving only 6/7 GTO’s with the RA-IV engine with automatic transmission. (There is some debate on how many RA-IV Judge convertible automatics there were)

**Only 1,457 of the 40,149 GTO’s were ordered in Palomino Copper making it the 4th rarest color.
